The ‘Thursday Next’ series from Jasper Fforde attempts to mimic the appearance of a battered paperback by ‘ageing’ the artwork artificially. The fact that the cover is likely to have been designed on a digital medium seems ironic. As this is a paperback series, the designer may have made this decision to keep costs down. There is no way of actually distressing every book and it would likely prove counterproductive as the books would be seen as ‘damaged’ and not sell, rather than it being part of the cover concept. Unlike some of the recent hardback books where value is added through the intricate design work, there are less options with a paperback; the designer has worked within the constraints of the budget and created this value in a different way.
